Our family heirlooms – paintings signed by W. Makowski – question about the author of the paintings
Ladies and Gentlemen!
We are in possession of several paintings. These are our family heirlooms. We are not experts or connoisseurs of art and we would like to know if the author signed on the paintings – W. Makowski – is a famous artist and if his paintings represent any artistic value. On your website, we found a painting of probably the same author, therefore we would like to ask for possible confirmation, explanation or providing any information about the painter W. Makowski.
We will be grateful for your reply. Please find attached photos of the two pictures.
Kind regards
Mieczysław Watycha
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I was very happy when I found this page. I am also in possession of the painting by this author. I rather can’t be wrong. It is very similar to the picture posted by Mr. Mieczysław Wartych (the one on the right – lonely trees). My painting is 50 × 70 cm and shows a forest. In the corner the author’s signature – I believe that it is identical to the one posted on the website.
Unfortunately, I can’t say much about him. He has been with me for over 30 years. I inherited it from my foster grandfather – an amateur painter. He even made a copy of the painting himself. I remember that there were two – for a small child – “identical” pictures in the house. Unfortunately, I don’t know what happened to him.
I think that this is not the same author whose painting is in the Lviv gallery, although I must admit that it would be nice to have a painting of the author at home, who deserved that his works shared the room with the works of Siemiradzki.
I think the remark that he is an artist from the vicinity of Łódź is correct. I myself come from this city. Moreover, someone of you suggested that the painting was dated from the 1920s (mine is not dated). So maybe my “Dziadzio”, born in 1907 – because of his interests – could deal with these spheres and know the author personally (but I went crazy). Unfortunately, I will never find out.
One more thing, Dziadzio, although he had several paintings, always made a reservation that this one belonged to me – to his beloved step-granddaughter – he had no children. I don’t know if this is a sentiment to the painting or if he believed that it also had a material value.
I hope that together we will be able to present the work of this “mysterious” painter, whose paintings – as you can see – decorate many Polish apartments.
One thing is for sure, it is a beautiful, valuable souvenir for me (regardless of the market value) and will soon get a new frame. It is currently in a frame and I have to admit that the large golden frame makes it dignity. It really looks beautiful and regardless of whether it is worth a lot or not according to experts, it will always hold a place of honor in my home and memory. After all, this is the most important thing.
I encourage you to look at the paintings at home in such a way, maybe you will also think about framing them, although I admit it is not cheap, but I think it is worth it. Let us respect our family mementos.
I would be grateful for any information about “our painter”.
I will also try to present my painting in its new glory.
I greet everyone
Sylwia
Thank you for your interesting news. It’s nice that you managed to find something about this painter.
Regards, M. Watycha
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I would like to pass a message to Mr. Mieczysław and other owners of W. Makowski’s paintings, family mementos that they shared with others in this gallery (thank you for “reviving” them to everyone!).
After a quick search of the Internet, you can find paintings by the painter W. Makowski, here is the first “bearing”:
LWOW ART GALLERY
The Lviv Art Gallery (as the Lviv Picture Gallery has been called since 1998) was established by the Lviv magistrate in 1897.
Room 23 – Henryk Siemiradzki “At the Source”, “Christ and the Samaritan Woman”, W. Makowski – “The Village”
Room 23 is located in section 9. – POLISH ART, this painter should not be confused with another W. Makowski (Vladimir Makowski) – a Russian painter, his paintings (mainly from the life of Russia at that time) are located in another section – 13. RUSSIAN SEARCH.
Thus, it can be assumed that these are paintings by a famous painter and quite valuable if his “Village” (and therefore topics similar to those posted in this National GA.PA online gallery – see exhibit 7-4 and others) are placed NEXT to a very well-known painter Henryk Siemiradzki.
I hope that this information will be useful, I will continue to explore the internet and art history (it is very interesting!) In my search for traces of these and other family mementoes (invaluable for the owners, after all).
I cordially greet all visitors of this amazing gallery,
Janek M.
